It's different from his other books for sure, but it is very enjoyable. Reamde is Stephenson in Hollywood Blockbuster mode.
Example: he uses about 150 pages just describing a guy trying to climb out a window. And it is the most insanely action-filled set piece imaginable. The book is like candy; it tastes great while it lasts, but that's all it will give you. There are some cool ideas in it, like the game economy, but ultimately it is just fun and little substance. You got a lot of answers already, but let me throw my two cents in. Reamde is a solid book, but it's about as much science fiction as any Robert Langdon book by Dan Brown. In fact, when I read it I felt like Brown and Stephenson went to the same writing workshop. The character backstories, and the plot elements (especially the unlikely coincidences and even less likely romantic entanglements) made the two authors very similar. The only real difference is that Stephenson can juggle multiple converging storylines and track four different groups of characters at once. So if you adjust your expectations and read Reamde as a highly unrealistic spy adventure, you'll enjoy it.
